My Journey of Art

MyJourneyofArt

Each work begins in stillness — where gesture, space, and intention meet. It is an exploration of balance: between control and freedom, and between what is shown and what remains unsaid.

Where it all began

I don’t remember choosing art. It felt more like something I kept returning to — a quiet place where I could observe, listen, and make sense of what I could not always put into words.

Before I understood technique, I was drawn to the simple act of making marks: the movement of the hand, the rhythm of ink, the silence around a line. Over time, I began to understand that the space around the work mattered just as much as the work itself. This is where I found MA — the pause, the interval, the presence of emptiness.

My paintings are not about filling space. They are about allowing space to speak.

Traveling Shaped my Art

Traveling taught me to see space differently. Between places, cultures, and moments of stillness, I began to understand the beauty of the in-between — a feeling that continues to shape my work, my rhythm, and my way of seeing.

Built by hand

Every work begins by hand — from the wooden frame to the final mark. I build, stretch, and prepare each surface myself, allowing the process to become part of the piece before the first line is made.

  • Ashley Vong builds a painting frame out of wood

    The Frame

I build each wooden frame by hand, measuring, cutting, and joining every piece with care to create a stable foundation.

  • Ashley Vong put the canvas on the frame

    The Tension

I stretch the canvas slowly across the frame, pulling it evenly from each side until the surface holds the right tension.

  • Ashley Vong apply a layer od primier across the canvas

    The Surface

I prime the canvas in quiet layers, preparing the surface carefully before the first mark is ever made.

What shapes my work

I am drawn to the space before the first mark — the quiet surface, the pause, and the feeling of something beginning.

My work begins in stillness. Before I paint, I spend time with the surface, the materials, and the space around them. I am interested in what happens between presence and absence — between the mark and the silence that holds it. Through calligraphic movement and the concept of MA, I create pieces that invite pause, attention, and quiet connection.

If my work speaks to you, I invite you to get in touch. Whether for inquiries or a simple exchange — I’m always open to connecting.
